A "Big-Data" Framework for Decision-Making in Transportation Systems
Abstract
In this talk, I first introduce the vision, research and projects of the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), a graduated NSF Engineering Research Center at USC in the area of multimedia. The current research focus of IMSC is on a new geo-socio-temporal computing paradigm, termed Geo-Immersion. Geo-Immersion enables humans to capture, model and integrate real-world data into a geo-realistic virtual replica of the world for immersive data access, querying and analysis. Then, I focus on one of the IMSC’s project in the area of transportation.
The vast amounts of transportation datasets (traffic flow,
incidents, etc.) collected by various federal and state agencies are extremely
valuable in 1) real-time decision-making, planning, and management of the
transportation systems, and 2) conducting research to develop new policies to
enhance the efficacy of the transportation systems. In this talk, I will present our
data-driven framework, dubbed TransDec (short for Transportation
Decision-Making), which enables real-time integration, visualization, querying,
and analysis of dynamic and archived transportation data. I will show that
considering the large size of the transportation data, variety of the data
(different modalities and resolutions), and frequent changes of the data, implementation
of such a scalable system that allows for effective querying and analysis of
both archived and real-time data is an intrinsically challenging data
management task. Consequently, I will discuss our initial approach to this
problem and demonstrate its implementation within the TransDec framework.

Real-time Traffic Video Analysis Using Intel Viewmont Co-precessor

Abstract
During the past year, USC IMSC has been continuously collecting and archiving the LA-MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) loop detector data from a collection of approximately 6300 sensors located on the highways and arterial streets of Los Angeles County (covering 3420 paved miles). The main traffic flow data collected from these sensors are occupancy, volume, and speed. One of the main shortcomings of these under-pavement traffic loop detectors is that they are expensive to install and maintain. Moreover, they cannot be replaced or fixed without disturbing traffic. Therefore, we have been studying computer vision techniques to extract traffic flow data from CCTV traffic cameras. However, there are two challenges with this approach. First, since image-processing techniques are CPU-intensive, for real-time traffic data extraction from traffic videos, accuracy needs to be sacrificed. Second, the traffic measurements extracted from CCTV cameras have not been validated in various situations.
We can address both aforementioned challenges
with vision-based techniques in a partnership with Intel. First, utilizing the Intel’s Viewmont
coprocessor, a dedicated hardware for video analysis, we can benefit from the
extra processing power (and time) to easily incorporate more accurate
vision-based techniques. Second, our
connections with LA-MTA allow us to validate the vision-based system by
comparing the sensor measurements obtained from MTA’s cameras and loop
detectors that cover the same road segment.
